Let’s face it: the holidays can be both a joyful and incredibly stressful time. Between family obligations, financial pressures, and the push to make everything “perfect,” we can easily find ourselves feeling overwhelmed. The good news? You don’t have to get caught up in the chaos. With a few intentional steps, you can design a holiday season that’s filled with joy rather than stress. Here’s a plan inspired by Chalene Johnson and my own experiences, designed to help you feel in control and focused on what truly matters.
1. Identify and Eliminate Unnecessary Stressors
Start with a “Holiday Stress Inventory.” Write down every task, event, and to-do on your mind. Once you have your list, be ruthless about eliminating anything that doesn’t add joy to your season. Focus only on what really matters, and cross off anything that adds unnecessary pressure. This includes that annual year after year cookie swap that you might be tired of or if it's not BRINGING YOU JOY - why are you continuing to do it?
2. Create a Calm and Cozy Space
Your environment matters! Set up a “Calm Corner” in your home—a space where you can decompress. Use this area to read, meditate, or just enjoy a few minutes of peace whenever you need a reset.
3. Choose Joy Over Perfection
This season, focus on the experience over how things “look.” Define three main priorities for your holidays. This could be spending quality time with loved ones, savoring your favorite traditions, or practicing gratitude. Let these priorities guide your actions and free yourself from the pressure to make everything “picture-perfect.”
4. Schedule Self-Care as a Non-Negotiable
Plan a few self-care sessions and guard this time like any other appointment. Whether it’s a walk, a cozy evening with a book, or a long bath, make self-care a priority. You deserve to enjoy the holidays, too!
Take a Deep Breath, and Embrace the Season
By focusing on what brings you joy and letting go of unnecessary stressors, you can create a holiday season that’s truly memorable and meaningful. Remember, the most important thing isn’t perfection—it’s the memories you create, the love you share, and the joy you feel.
Let’s make this the season you look back on with a full heart and a calm mind. Happy Holidays, and may they be truly joyful!
